Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of an individual Jury member. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
