Typically, the person being investigated was either an active participant in an important occasion or has made an extraordinary declaration or suggestion that has been documented. Barbara Heck left neither letters and statements. The only evidence we have regarding the date of Barbara Heck's marriage comes from secondary sources. The lack of a primary source can be used to reconstruct Barbara Heck's motives or behavior throughout her life. However, she was a cult figure in the beginning of Methodism. The biographer's mission is to determine the myth and explain it and, if it is possible, to identify the person who is enshrined within the myth.

Abel Stevens, a Methodist historian, wrote this article in 1866. Barbara Heck, a humble woman who was from the New World who is credited with the growth of Methodism throughout all of the United States, has undoubtedly been a leader in the ecclesiastical history of the New World. Her accomplishments are based more on the importance of the cause that she was involved in than on her private life. Barbara Heck, who was not in the least involved in the beginning of Methodism both in America and Canada, is a woman known for her fame due to the tendency of a successful institution or movement to exalt the roots of its founding to enhance its belief in the continuity and history.
